    Types of Home Attic/Sub-Floor Insulation

We have four types of insulation material that we use to do the job just right.

    Fiberglass
The most common insulation material is always fiberglass due to its budget-friendly nature and because it isn’t an irritant.

    Cellulose
Cellulose insulation is made of fire-resistant recycled paper. Thanks to its tightly packed nature, it’s excellent at resisting airflow.

    Rock Wool
Rock wool is crafted through a process of spinning or drawing fibers from molten materials. As a result, you have insulation that’s effective at temperature regulation.

    EcoBatt Cellulose
Made from renewable, organic materials, EcoBatt combines sand, post-consumer recycled glass, and ECOSE technology to bring an insulation material of the future.

Universal Pest & Termite Understands Pest Control for Roaches?

Our technicians know how to eliminate roaches. Each tech understands that roaches can hide in your cabinet, walls and even your furniture. We offer FREE EMERGENCY RETURN VISITS standard with our Border-Guard Roach Pest Control Program. Call today for a free inspection.

Roach Facts:
-Roaches are excellent climbers, thanks to the brush-like pile on their legs and feet. Thousands of tiny pillus ends work together to create a suction cup-like force that allows them to climb steep vertical surfaces.
-Roaches produce allergens that can cause an allergic response in humans. In fact, 30 million people in the U.S. are allergic to roaches. When cockroaches shed skin or defecate, proteins produced in their bodies are released into the environment. These proteins become airborne allergens that cause allergic responses in humans.

Why choose Universal Pest & Termite for your roach pest control needs?

Universal Pest & Termite is a family owned and operated company. Which is based right here in Virginia Beach with offices on the Peninsula and Southside. We believe the best way to control roaches is to keep them out of your house in the first place which is why we offer our exclusive Border-Guard service. Our program comes with FREE INTERIOR SERVICES if needed as well as FREE EMERGENCY SERVICES if needed.

Pest Control

Universal Pest will take steps to mitigate cockroach problems through barrier exclusion. Barrier exclusion involves preventing cockroaches from entering the home through small cracks in walls, gaps near electric sockets and switch plates, and up through drains. We use a silicone-based caulk to seal these openings.

Our technicians are trained to identify the type of roach infestation you may have. This is very important when establishing a program that best fits your needs. For example, a German Roach may be best controlled with a residual, but an American Roach should be controlled with baits.

Moisture Under My House

Moisture Issues Under my Home

Wood-Rot in Crawl Space

With high levels of moisture comes wood-rot. Expect a crawl space that holds a moisture level of 19% or higher to produce wood decay and damage. If neglected, this could produce extensive damage to your sub-floor, beams and floor joist. It is important to know that moisture levels can very depending on time of year and humidity levels outside. A home that is inspected in January can have a moisture level of 0, but that same home in July could read 22% or higher. It is common for a termite/moisture company to recommend a fungi treatment when wood decay is present. This alone will not solve the problem, only address a symptom. A combination of having a encapsulation system installed as well as installing a dehumidifier may better suit the underlying issue. We offer a full structural repair service. We have literally repaired thousands of floor joist and beams with damage due to termites, a dirty crawl space and wood decay.

Wood Decay or Not Wood Decay?

Just because you hear “Decay” doesn’t mean there is a significant moisture issue. Most decay evidence is simply a surface fungi that will not and can not cause structural damage. The moisture level under a home can tell the story. A non-decay or “surface fungi” needs a low level of moisture where a Wood Decay will need a high level of constant moisture to survive. Make sure a moisture meter is used when determining if you home has a fungi or wood decay problem. Schedule an inspection Here

Surface mold fungi will cause cosmetic discoloration only, and it will not significantly damage the structural strength of the wood. This mold can simply be cleaned off the surface.

Decay fungi will darken and shrink the wood, leading to severe structural damage of the wood and the eventual crumbling and decomposition of the wood overall. Wood with decay fungi looks soggy and spongy. This cannot simply be cleaned off, and replacement of damaged wood may be necessary.

 Condensation Under Your Home

Open vents in your foundation create moisture issues that lead to musty odors, mold growth, and damage to insulation in the crawl space. When you turn on your air conditioner in the summertime, it changes the air pressure under your home. Warm humid air enters your crawl space through the foundation vents. This humid air starts to condensate on HVAC ducts and trunk lines under your home. The warm air evaporates this moisture and it collects in your insulation and in your floor joists. You do not realize the problem under insulation starts stringing down and mold starts growing on all the wood members under the home. Best practice, as recommended by building scientists is to close your crawl space vents year round.

Basements and crawl spaces are below-grade areas where high humidity levels can cause numerous problems. Moisture that saturates “fluffy” insulation like cellulose or fiberglass batts will dramatically diminish the insulation’s R-value and adversely affect energy efficiency. Moisture also helps to promote the growth of mold on organic materials like wood, paper, and even some types of paint. Mold spreads by means of airborne spores. These microscopic organisms pose a serious health hazard. Musty odors and mold stains are telltale signs of excess moisture that is promoting mold growth.

Encapsulation:  Crawl Space encapsulation is becoming a very popular home improvement method used to solve crawl space problems. Encapsulation services in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and surrounding cities can run as much as $30,000.This is where Universal Pest & Termite comes in. We offer our exclusive Uni-Guard Encapsulation System. This program can save you thousands versus our competition. Our program comes with a full termite treatment and warranty. This is very important as your foundation will be covered and limited inspections can be made after install. Schedule FREE INSPECTION here.

Dehumidifier: Crawl Space Dehumidifiers for Pest Control: Crawl Space Dehumidifiers are not just for moisture control. A rise in the pest population means that you need to be more careful about pests’ intrusions. If your home has a high level of moisture in the crawlspace, it could cause termite problems that presents further damage. Excess moisture inside your home, especially if left unattended, becomes quite attractive to moisture loving pests like termites. Keep in mind that moisture may be hidden in areas like the crawl space, attic, or basement. If there is moisture, try to take care of it as soon as possible. This will help prevent pests, as well as mold, and fungi.

Crawl Space Dehumidifiers for Moisture Control: Another area of your home that can be a massive cause of moisture problems is your crawl space. If left unattended, your crawl space may be home to issues such as standing water, pests, or mold. If you do notice signs of high humidity and moisture, it’s important to take steps to control the humidity in the area. For instance, enclosing your crawl space and installing a dehumidifier will allow you to maintain a consistent humidity level and prevent many future issues.

Does Your Home Have Termites?

Does Your Home Have Termites?

Termite Pictures | Termite Identification

Termites can cause major structural damage to homes and other buildings as well as wooden furniture. People usually only see termites inside when an infestation is already well established, though you may also find termites outside around dead tree stumps, rotting boards or other detritus. Termite colonies are divided into different classes, and most termites only come out in the dark. The most common class that you will see outside of the colony is the alate class, or winged termites. Winged termites are a reproductive class and they swarm before they mate. You can identify termites through their body shape, legs and wings. We are showing here you different termite pictures, termite damage and how to identify termite in your home and surroundings.

Termite Damage | Termite Mud Tubes

Subterranean termites begin their feeding process (damage) from the ground up and typically enter a building through the sub-structure. Homes with crawl spaces are at great risk. It is here you should look for evidence of damaged wood and mud tubes. Wood damaged by this particular species develops “galleries” (hollow tunnels), which run along the grain of the wood.
The presence of mud-like material that lines the galleries in an irregular pattern.
Termites may excavate the wood so that only a very thin layer of wood is left on the surface of the cavity and the outside. Then this layer is broken; they will cover the holes with mud like material, used to make the tubes. This is a mixture of soil, faeces, and saliva.

Swarming Termites Virginia Beach

Swarming Termites in Virginia Beach

Flying Termites Virginia Beach

Signs of a Possible Home Termite Infestation

Swarmer Termites

Winged termites emerging indoors or outside from swarming tubes immediately adjacent to the structure are often the first sign of a subterranean infestation. Swarming termites are attracted to light. Therefore, swarmers or flying termites indoors are often found around lighting fixtures, windows, doors and vents. Also, large numbers of discarded termite wings on windowsills, floors or in spider webs are a sure sign of infestation. If you see only wings in your Virginia Beach home you should simply send us a quick picture and we can ID for you.

    • Milky White Wings Around Windows or Doors can be an indication

 Wood damage.

A common indication of subterranean infestation is the presence of dark areas or blisters in wood flooring. However, subterranean termite damage can go unnoticed because the termites only eat the spring wood leaving the grain and exterior surface intact. However, the galleries can be detected by tapping the wood every few inches with the handle of a screwdriver. The damaged wood sounds hollow and the screwdriver may even break through the wood into the galleries. If the galleries are active the worker termites will be observed inside. Universal Pest & Termite offers a complete termite repair solution in Virginia Beach.

 Termite tubes -

Termites are pretty fragile insects. They don't have defenses against predators, and they require a moist environment to survive. To get around safely when they aren't underground or inside a piece of wood, they build tubes, small tunnels made of mud and cellulose. The tubes look like little brown straws. If you have termites, inspecting the foundation around your Virginia Beach home may reveal a number of termite tubes. To make sure a tube is still active and not part of an old infestation that's been eliminated, remove a small section of the tube and wait a few days. If termites are present, they'll repair the breach. That way, you'll know you still have a problem. There are other places you should check for termite tubes, too, like around water pipes, in crawl spaces, in your attic and in your basement.
